The “O Antiphons,” sometimes called the “Great Advent Antiphons,” date back to the 6th century and are chanted in the evening vespers of the Western Church over the last week of Advent, starting on December 17th. On this day, the Church throughout the world begins her week-long meditation on those beautiful titles expressing the messianic hopes attributed to Jesus that are drawn from the ancient prophecies of Isaiah and Micah: O Wisdom, O Adonai, O Root of Jesse, O Key of David, O Radiant Dawn, O King of Nations, O Emmanuel.

Each Antiphon, beginning with the evocative “O!” reflects the Church’s longing for the coming of the Messiah, as is captured most famously in the Advent hymn, “O Come, O Come Emmanuel.” This year, we will be exploring the third of the Antiphons: “O! Root of Jesse:”

O Root of Jesse, standing as a sign among the peoples;

before you kings will shut their mouths,

to you the nations will make their prayer:

Come and deliver us, and delay no longer.

Join Fr. Vincent Pizzuto, PhD, Vicar of St. Columba’s, for an Advent Day of Silence & Reflection on Wednesday, December 18th from 10-4pm. Together we will explore the scriptural, historical, and christological richness of this messianic title, offering enduring hope in the one who delivers us to a peace which the world cannot give, even amidst seasons of political upheaval, national strife, and global conflict.
