Valerie Rose is a current member of Wake the Dead, presents songs and dance tunes from the great Irish / Celtic tradition. Hearkening back to the pioneers of the Celtic folk music revival such as Clannad and Altan, Valerie’s arrangements of traditional tunes and songs are spiced with rich harmonies and playful interchanges between voice and instruments. Audiences find captivating the pure, haunting quality of her voice and the vibrant intensity of her fiddling. With each piece, she brings to life the transcendent beauty of Celtic melodies and the joyous energy of the tradition’s jigs and reels. Jason Pollack is one of the most dynamic Irish flute players in the Bay Area. His full sound and crisp ornamentations help bring the tunes of Irish Traditional Music alive. He always seeks to express the unique character and energy of each tune, from lively and bright to somber and dark, and many shades in between. Having been classically trained, Jason found Irish music later in life and has been devoted to it ever since. He believes that, since the tunes are dance music, if people are moving to the music, then he’s done his job, he’s doing it right.
Sylvia Herold in her first appearance at St. Columba’s is a noted singer and guitar performer from the San Francisco Bay Area. As a song sleuth Sylvia Herold mines the motherlode of American jazz and popular song from the 1930s through the 1960s. Songs of wit and romance by composers Cole Porter, Hoagy Carmichael, George Gershwin, and Harold Arlen are lovingly rendered in a voice the San Francisco Examiner calls “mesmerizing.” Herold was a member of the swing vocal trio Cats & Jammers and The Hot Club of San Francisco. Currently, she tours and records with Wake the Dead, The Lonestar Retrobates and The Sylvia Herold Ensemble. She has appeared on more than 25 albums, including five solo recordings. and is a highly regarded instructor of guitar and repertoire privately, online, and at adult music camps across the United States.
